Force Drone Unit

Good afternoon,

We won’t drone on about it, but we’re really proud of the latest work from our Force Drone Unit 🛰

Watch this video to see footage from our Force Drone Unit. All the imagery is captured from recent incidents which have had support from a police drone in North Yorkshire.

Working around the clock 24-7, we deploy specially trained officers across the county who are equipped with a police issued drone.

The drones are not a replacement for our police air support service (NPAS), they are a contingency for us at times when it is not suitable to use the helicopter or it is not available.

All of our drone operators have blue light vehicle capability which means that the drone can often be deployed to the scene of incidents quickly. Here are some examples of when we use a police drone:

➡️To help search large open space for suspects or vulnerable people

➡️To manage critical incidents which includes feeding live footage into our Force Control Room

➡️To help capture evidence and provide an overview for planning of large events

North Yorkshire Police’s Chief Drone Pilot, PC Tom Joyce said: “When required, our drones can be deployed with a moment’s notice to support frontline policing.

“The use of a drone has directly resulted in us seeking out suspects who are trying to evade arrest. Our message is clear; you can run but you can’t hide.

“We will continue to work with other forces around the country to further develop innovative ways to help keep communities safe”.
