Ninja Swords

Resident

On the 1st August 2025, “ninja swords” were added to the list of prohibited weapons.

This means, that you are not allowed to keep any ninja swords, even at home.

The previous Surrender and Compensation Scheme has now ended, which means that if you are still in possession of a ninja sword (without a defence) then the possession is unlawful.

What is a ninja sword?

They are swords with a blade length between 14 and 24 inches, with a single straight cutting edge and distinctive tanto-style point.

There is a complete description of the swords and a reason why a defence may be made to be in possession of one here:  https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/67e41a11f356a2dc0e39b4ef/Public_guidance_for_the_Ninja_Sword_Surrender_Scheme.pdf

The swords join an extensive list of prohibited weapons which include, (but not limited to)

  • Knuckledusters

  • Swordsticks

  • Belt buckle knives

  • Push daggers

  • Death stars

  • Telescopic truncheons

  • Manrikigusari – a length of rope, cord, wire or chain fastened at each end to a hard weight or hand grip.

  • Stealth knife

  • A sword with a curved blade of over 50cm or over in length.

  • Should you review any collections you may have, or you have a ninja sword which you haven’t dealt with during the surrender scheme time, then please get in touch with us.

For weapons on the prohibited list, we will attend your address to collect them for disposal. Please email snascarborough@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk

If you have any knives or blades you wish to dispose of, wrap the blade in either thick paper or cardboard and secure with tape, then you can deposit it/them safely in the knife bin. In Scarborough, it is an orange box, grounded in William Street Coach Park.
